[1:24] About Jesse

Started in the social media world as a blogger, and not Instagram is her main platform

Marketing Manager for Modern Collective & Toronto Business Babes

[2:28] Tell us about what a “Social Media Marketer” is. What does that mean? What do you do? How do you do it!?

Jesse helps small businesses build their social media accounts by creating customized plans and simple guides they can follow.

[7:00] Part One: Content Creation

[7:10] 1. Why is social media marketing important for entrepreneurs and small businesses?

It's one of the best ways to LEARN ABOUT & CONNECT WITH your customers and potential customers

[10:00] 2. What are the key things we need to know about content creation?

Be Original; be Authentic; be Relatable

It's okay to look at other pages for inspiration, but create something on your own; don't take from others

Plan your content in advance: Weekly plans are good, Monthly plans are better

Be mindful of who your target audience is

You don't need a professional camera

Stock photos are fine to integrate with your own content if they relate to your business

Make sure your colours and themes match so your grid is aesthetically pleasing

Don't overload your Facebook posts and Newsletters with overwhelming amount of text, let this be the hook for more of you and to reach your site

[18:42] 3. What does it mean to “batch” our content? How do we do this?

Batching = Creating or Planning your content all at once
i.e. Take all the blog/Instagram photos; write all the captions; plan out all the drafts; collecting relevant stock photos/content for your feed/theme

Keep your monthly themes and colours in mind for when you're creating content

Instagram Drafts & Planning Apps can be really helpful too!

[23:29] 4. Most of the time I’m working from home, alone, how do we shoot our own photos and create our own quality content?

Phone TRIPOD with light ring and bluetooth remote!

Use props to frame your shoot and use your phone grid

[28:43] Part Two: Social Engagement

[28:50] 5. I’m always hearing about algorithms and engagement. What does this mean? Why is engagement so important?

The algorithm is constantly changing. Instagram pushes posts based on what the user is interested in. Essentially it's based on user connection.

Things that build engagement:
Re-sharable content (i.e. Infographics, quotes)
Push buttons/prompts in Instagram Stories
User-generated content

[32:46] 6. How do we keep up with the always changing algorithm? What types of analytics should we be paying attention to the most?

Build your relationships with the users and keep your posts relevant to them

Post engagement and when/how often you post is also important

Calculating Your Engagement Rate: take your fourth photo all the way to your tenth photo. Add up the number of likes + comments calculate the average out of seven, and then divide that by your number of followers.

Comments are more important thank likes

Accounts set up for business: Look at individual post insights also!

[37:12] 7. Okay, what about Instagram story engagement? How do we increase this?

Caption your stories!

You are allowed to use 10 hashtags per story, use them!

Tag accounts + use location (geo) tags

[41:48] Part Three: Putting it All Together

[41:55] 8. Teach us how to plan our content! The listeners love the practical and tactical step-by-step.

1. Choose Your Monthly Theme

2. Plan Your Photos

3. Lay It All Out in Your Planner

4. Create & Collect Your Photos and Put into Drafts of Planner App

5. Create Your Captions

6. Create Your Hashtag Groups

7. Put it all together and sit back and relax!

[46:20] 9. What are some questions you aren’t necessarily getting about social media marketing, but people should be asking?

“How do I build my engagement?”… three ways
